innovative solutions for the performing musician

QC 2019 Spring Banner (4).png

Welcome.

Queen City Reed Company started out as an opportunity to fund my doctoral research and has grown into a cutting-edge business that utilizes cross-disciplinary research in manufacturing and material science. Through integrating a proprietary quality management assessment into the manufacturing sequence, we sort and process cane based on its intrinsic material properties to minimize waste, time, and reduce cost. Through a synthesis of technology, sustainability, and artistry, we are able to provide you the finest and most consistent reed cane, materials, and products possible.

-Cullen Blain, Founder

The Mark of Craftsmanship

All of our reeds are crafted by hand from start to finish using the finest quality materials available. Reed Cane is sorted and processed in-house which guarantees our quality, consistency, and keeps our price point competitive. The reed blanks are stored in a climate controlled environment anywhere from 3 to 8 months ensuring a stable and long-lasting bassoon reed.

The Standard of Excellence

Our Reed Micrometer is quickly becoming the standard in measurement and craftsmanship. Made with high-grade materials and using a Starrett indicator, this micrometer is sleek, precise, and durable.

Be Remarkable.

In 2012, Cullen founded Queen City Reed & Company (previously C.B. Reeds & Tools) to self-fund his doctoral research on reed cane. In collaboration with UC’s College-Conservatory of Music, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the Centers of Entrepreneurship and Commercialization through the Lindner College of Business, this broad research endeavor was implemented as a modular materials-performance test across the manufacturing of reeds, processed cane, and musical instruments.

Innovative solutions for the performing musician.

Queen City Reed & Company has been supporting professionals and students alike through a full line of performance ready reeds, high-quality reed making supplies, and precision tools.

Musicians who are using our products include members of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Dayton Philharmonic, Buffalo Philharmonic, Colorado Symphony, Knoxville Symphony, Orchestra Iowa, the United States Military Bands, as well as freelancers in New York City, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Tampa, and students from around the country.
